Did you know that you can visit free-roaming sheep just outside of Edmonton in the City of Fort Saskatchewan? It is such a fun, easy daytrip to make with your kids. The sheep of Fort Saskatchewan have been keeping the grass trim in City parks for almost three decades. The city uses the flock as an eco-friendly way of looking after the parks and keeping the grass trim.
It’s quite the sight to see a shepherd and sheepdogs in the city, herding the flock of 50 warm, friendly, and fuzzy sheep. My kids (and I) think it’s the coolest thing that you can just walk amongst the sheep, no fences or barriers and pet them and feed them and take pictures with them.
We visited the sheep last summer and just this past week as well. We plan on going again at least once more this season too.
When can I visit the sheep?
The grazing program runs from June 2 to September 4. You can find them Wednesday to Saturday from 12:30 – 8 pm.
Where do I go to see the sheep?
The sheep can be found at the Fort Heritage Precinct (10006 100 Avenue). There’s a big parking lot with lots of free parking. If you don’t see the sheep at first, just take a look around. Sometimes they take them just down the hill to find better grass.
Should I bring anything?
The sheep go crazy for carrots and apples. Just be sure to break them down into smaller pieces. And fair warning, they’ll be chasing you down for them haha. Also, wear proper footwear. You’ll be in the grass and dirt and there’s sheep poop to watch out for.
After you’ve got your fill of the sheep, I highly recommend walking just down the street to Miller’s Ice Cream. Millers is a local family-owned business that has been serving ice cream in downtown Fort Saskatchewan since 1985! They have tons of flavours to choose from and it’s all delicious. New this year they also have a cute instagrammable wall by @illustrious.interiors to take cute ice cream pictures in front of. Also a big attraction, if you have little kids, is an old CN Rail train car right beside it that you can climb around on. Perfect day out for families with younger kids.
Hope I was able to answer all your questions about visiting the Fort Saskatchewan sheep. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments. If you head out to visit them yourself, tag me on Instagram @alexandtribe I’d love to see your pictures!
