How to Plan a Fun and Easy Calgary Vacation with Kids

There’s something really special about a tradition. For us, that’s our annual “friendcation” to Calgary — me, my bestie, and our crew of four kids. It started five summers ago as a quick getaway with toddlers in tow. Now it’s a full-blown summer highlight, packed with memory-making, kid-approved adventures, and just enough downtime for us moms to exhale.

This year’s trip was extra memorable — partly because we tried some new spots, and partly because we got to stay at one of our all-time favourite places: Sheraton Suites Calgary Eau Claire. It’s a hotel we’ve returned to over and over for good reason (more on that below). If you’re planning a Calgary family trip — or just looking to start a new summer tradition of your own — here’s a roundup of everything we loved (and what’s on our radar for next time). And, if you’re interested, here’s some highlights from previous Calgary visits.

Where We Stayed: Sheraton Suites Calgary Eau Claire

This hotel is truly a gem for families. It’s the only hotel in downtown Calgary with a waterslide (a major win for the kids), and it’s walking distance to Prince’s Island Park, the river walk, and some of the city’s best restaurants and attractions — including the Calgary Zoo and Eau Claire Market.

Every evening, we loaded up the scooters and went for a sunset stroll along the river. It’s always one of our favourite moments of the trip — unhurried, golden-hour magic. The central location also makes it easy to pop back to the hotel for breaks between activities, or hit a nearby patio with happy hour drinks & snacks, which is key when you’re with kids.

If you’re planning a stay here, I highly recommend booking a Club Level suite. You get access to a beautiful rooftop patio (perfect for winding down after a busy day), a continental breakfast each morning, and daily hors d’oeuvres that make it easy to keep everyone fed and happy before dinner. It’s one of those upgrades that’s totally worth it — especially with kids in tow.

A big thank you to Sheraton Suites for hosting us again this year — this hotel has officially become part of our friendcation tradition, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Where We Ate: Flower & Wolf

Located right inside the hotel, Flower & Wolf is one of those places that feels elevated without being fussy — perfect for grown-up meals with kids in tow. They’ve got a gorgeous patio, amazing brunch, and cocktails that deserve a moment of their own (moms, you’ll thank me later).

If you’re there on the weekend, they also have a breakfast buffet, which if you ask me, is always a win with kids.

What We Did (And Loved)

Heritage Park

How had we never been here before?! Heritage Park quickly became one of our favourite Calgary experiences. The kids were obsessed with the vintage midway rides, and I could’ve stayed on the SS Moyie paddle wheeler all day. Make time for ice cream, and don’t skip the new dino dig — it’s hands-on and super fun. We spent nearly a full day here and could’ve easily stayed longer.

Calaway Park

A summer classic. Our kids love this place — it has just the right mix of rides for different ages. Pro tips: buy your tickets online in advance to save, and bring water, hats, and sunscreen — it gets hot. We usually avoid carnival games, but this time? Every kid walked away with a stuffy and a huge smile. The staff were honestly amazing.

What We Skipped (But Still Recommend)

We try to mix it up each year, so while some favourites didn’t make the list this time, they’re still worth visiting:

  • Calgary Zoo – We’ve done it four years in a row, so gave it a break this summer. Still a top pick.
  • Float down the Bow River – A chill way to spend a hot day, especially with older kids. We did this one last year and it was so much fun.
  • Granary Road – So great with younger ones; ours are just starting to age out.
  • TELUS Spark – Our go-to rain plan, though we’ve lucked out with weather every year we go.
  • LaunchPad Golf, Cobb’s Adventure Park, Winsport Downhill Carts, PowerPlay at Southcentre – All still on our future list!

These are the summer’s they’ll remember

Every year, we make new memories, find new favourites, and somehow fall a little more in love with Calgary. The best part? Watching our kids grow into this tradition — from stroller naps and snack cups to scooters and mini thrill rides.

Whether you’re starting your own friendcation, planning a family weekend away, or just bookmarking ideas for future summers, I hope this gives you a little inspiration — and maybe a few new things to add to your list.

Save this post for your next Calgary trip — and feel free to share it with your fellow mom friends. These are the summers they’ll remember. And honestly? So will we.
